Overflows are used where it is necessary to feed material from the cell sluice (cell feeder) into the pipeline.

Examples of such situations include receiving from under a cyclone or filter, as well as introducing material into a closed air loop, known as a safety pin (such an arrangement is commonly found in wood pellet lines).
